RIASEC is an abbrevation that refers to John Holland’s six personality types: Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E) and Conventional (C). It is also known as the “Holland Codes”. It is based on Holland’s Theory of Career Choice, in which Holland proposed that there are six personality types that are determined by our interest and how we approach life situations. It is helpful in choosing work or an education program environment that matches, or is similar to your personality, will most likely lead to success and satisfaction.

Though there are six types defined under this theory, in reality it does not only transalate to six types of people. Rather, there are 720 combinations of persoanlity types possible with these 6 classifications.

When you take a RIASEC assessment test you should get a score weighting your preference or dominance across all 6 types. However, only the first three letters are focused on for assessment or intervention.
